With pressures on government budgets building, Stonehaven have revisited its 2024 paper on the increasing likelihood of electric vehicles being taxed per mile, finding that the public continue to be more supportive of per-mile charging than conventional political wisdom would suggest. But will this last? Looking at one of the obvious imbalances in the current system – the differences in the cost of recharging an electric vehicle – we find that the public have an even stronger wish for a fair deal – and that fairness has yet to be defined.
This means that the questions currently absorbing the electric vehicle sector – such as how to keep sales up and stop excessive red tape driving up public charging costs – are set to become even more relevant as government seeks to win backing for its new tax.
